Buying an ASIC Miner: Complete Guide & Watch-Outs

Editorial transactional post, anti-scam.

TL;DR. Three routes: direct from manufacturer (long + customs), authorized US/EU reseller (recommended, 1-3 week delivery), used market (max vigilance). Expect state sales tax or 20% VAT, $200-500 shipping, sometimes customs duty if cross-border. No new current-gen ASIC is below $3,500 — anything cheaper is a scam.

The 3 purchase routes

1. Direct from manufacturer (Bitmain, MicroBT, Bitdeer)

Order on the official sites:

Pros:

  • Official price
  • Sealed new machine, manufacturer warranty

Cons:

  • Ships from China (Hong Kong / Shenzhen)
  • Lead time: 3-8 weeks
  • Customs duty on you: 0% duty + 20% VAT at import (EU) + $50-150 broker fees

Avoid unless 10+ machines where scale economies compensate.

Multiple resellers are authorized by Bitmain / MicroBT in the US and Europe.

Pros:

  • Delivery 1-3 weeks
  • Local invoice (sales tax / VAT included)
  • Easier local SAV

Cons:

  • Reseller margin: +5 to +15% vs manufacturer price

For a first purchase or volume < 10 machines, this is the default route. See our catalogue for available models.

3. Used market — maximum vigilance

Specialized platforms (Kaboomracks, etc.) or private sales.

Pros:

  • Price 20-40% below new

Cons:

  • No manufacturer warranty (or limited residual)
  • Operating hours unknown — a 2-year-old ASIC may be near EOL
  • Stolen ASIC risk (rare but real)

Minimum requirements if buying used:

  • Serial number + photos of admin interface showing operating hours (< 17,000 h ideal)
  • Original purchase invoice
  • On-site test or 30-day guarantee minimum

Hidden costs

Tax

  • US: state sales tax varies (0-10% typical), included in reseller pricing
  • EU B2C: 20% VAT, included in reseller pricing
  • EU B2B intra-community: VAT exemption with valid VAT number → self-assessment
  • Cross-border import (manufacturer direct): 20% VAT (EU) or state sales tax (US) + 0% duty (HS code 8543)

Shipping

$200-500 for a current-gen machine (12-25 kg), depending on distance and urgency. Verify if transit insurance included (recommended).

Customs broker fees (if cross-border)

$50-150 broker fees (DHL, FedEx, UPS). Separate from customs duty and tax.

Power cable / PDU adaptation

ASICs ship without power cables (just C20 or C16 inlets). Budget $30-80 for a dedicated cable or rack PDU for multi-machine stacks.

SAV and warranty

Manufacturer warranty

  • Bitmain: 12 months on Antminer, functional only (no normal wear).
  • MicroBT: 12 months on Whatsminer, similar conditions.

SAV returns

Important: who pays return shipping?

  • US/EU reseller: typically reseller covers round-trip shipping in first year (verify in contract).
  • Direct manufacturer: return shipping on you (often to Hong Kong) → $150-300. Often economically prohibitive for a single machine.

Pre-purchase checks

Authenticity

  • Serial number on machine AND invoice. Must match.
  • Authenticity certificate Bitmain or MicroBT — verifiable on manufacturer site via serial number.
  • Photos from all angles if remote purchase.

Condition

CategoryDescriptionPrice vs new
NewNever unboxed, manufacturer seal intact100%
RefurbSAV-returned, repaired, retested by manufacturer, 6-month warranty−10 to −20%
UsedDeployed machine. Require operating hours−20 to −40%

Beyond 17,000 operating hours (~24 months 24/7), consider likely EOL.

Firmware

Verify firmware version. Some third-party firmwares (Vnish, LuxOS, Brain) are legitimate optimizations. Others can contain backdoors siphoning your hashrate to the firmware's pool.

Buy new if not familiar with third-party firmwares.

Scams to avoid

Private seller without SAV

A private seller offering "their unused ASIC" at 30% below market: 80% of the time it's an end-of-life machine, broken, or stolen. Always demand original invoice + serial number + diligence.

Disguised cloud mining

"Buy an ASIC from us, we operate it, we send you the BTC." As long as you physically own the machine or can retrieve it on demand, it's legitimate (it's our hosting model).

If the machine "runs in a datacenter you can't visit" and you can't retrieve it: disguised cloud mining = scam.

Abnormally low prices

"Antminer S21 Pro" at $1,300 on Aliexpress: it's a fake, a rebadged previous-gen, or nothing at all.

Absolute rule: no new current-gen ASIC is below $3,500 in 2026. Anything below that threshold is suspect.

Payment and invoicing

Payment mode

  • Wire/ACH: standard B2B and B2C in US/EU. Traceable, irrevocable.
  • Credit card: available at some resellers, low caps (often < $5,000).
  • BTC or stablecoin: accepted by some specialized resellers. No buyer protection.

Invoice

Essential for accounting, depreciation, B2B tax deduction.

Verify the invoice includes:

  • Seller's tax ID
  • Precise description (model + serial number)
  • Tax breakout
  • Warranty conditions

After purchase

Two questions:

  1. Where to host? Home vs hosted
  2. How to configure? How to start bitcoin mining step-by-step

Our hosting offer ships the machine directly to the partner datacenter (no detour through your address), with installation included.

Frequently asked questions

  • Where can I buy an ASIC miner in 2026?+

Three routes: 1) authorized EU/US reseller (recommended, 1-3 week delivery, local invoicing), 2) direct from manufacturer (Bitmain, MicroBT — 3-8 week lead time from China, customs duty on you), 3) used market (-20/-40% but max vigilance required).

  • Do you pay tax when buying an ASIC?+

Yes. EU B2C: 20% VAT included in reseller pricing. EU B2B intra-community: VAT exemption with valid VAT number. US: sales tax varies by state. Cross-border import: VAT/tax at import + $50-$150 broker fees + 0% customs duty (HS code 8543).

  • How do you avoid ASIC scams?+

Three signals: 1) abnormally low price (no new current-gen ASIC is below $3,500 in 2026), 2) private seller without invoice or serial number, 3) 'cloud mining' disguised as an ASIC purchase. Always demand original invoice, serial number, and physical access to the machine.

  • Should you buy a new or refurbished ASIC?+

New: never-unboxed machine, 12-month manufacturer warranty. Refurb (refurbished): SAV-returned, retested by manufacturer, at -10/-20% vs new but often reduced warranty (6 months). Prefer new if you're starting.

  • What's the delivery time for an ASIC?+

From an EU/US reseller: 1-3 weeks average. From Bitmain or MicroBT directly: 3-8 weeks (including customs). Lead times stretch during hashprice peaks. Order 2-3 months ahead of planned deployment.
