Buying an ASIC Miner: Complete Guide & Watch-Outs

In short. Three routes exist: direct from the manufacturer, slow and subject to customs; the authorized reseller, the one to prefer for a one to three week lead time; and the used market, which needs particular care. Expect sales tax or 20 % VAT, $200 to $500 of shipping, and broker fees on any cross-border purchase. No new current-generation ASIC drops below $3,500 in 2026: below that threshold, the listing is suspect.

The three purchase routes

Direct from the manufacturer

Orders go through the official sites, shop.bitmain.com or shop.microbt.com. You get the official price and a sealed new machine under manufacturer warranty.

In exchange, shipping leaves from China with a three to eight week lead time, and customs stays on you: no duty under HS code 8543, but import tax and $50 to $150 of broker fees. On a $6,000 machine that adds roughly $1,300 in the EU.

This route only justifies itself from about ten machines up, when volume pricing offsets the fixed costs and the delay.

The authorized reseller

Several resellers hold Bitmain and MicroBT authorization in the US and Europe. Delivery takes one to three weeks, the invoice is local with tax already included, and support is handled locally.

The trade-off sits in the reseller margin, 5 to 15 % above the manufacturer price. Set against import charges and the lead time of the direct route, it comes out ahead below ten machines almost every time.

The used market

Specialized platforms such as Kaboomracks, or private sales, run 20 to 40 % below new. In exchange, the manufacturer warranty has either expired or covers only a few remaining months, operating history is unknown, and the risk of a stolen machine exists even if it stays marginal.

Three minimum requirements before paying:

• the serial number, with screenshots of the admin interface showing operating hours, ideally under 17,000;
• the original purchase invoice;
• an on-site test, or a contractual 30-day guarantee at minimum.

Beyond 17,000 operating hours, roughly twenty-four months of continuous running, treat the machine as likely end-of-life and negotiate accordingly.

The costs that do not show on the listed price

Tax. In the US, state sales tax varies from 0 to about 10 % and is normally included in reseller pricing. In EU consumer sales, the 20 % VAT is already included by European resellers. In EU B2B intra-community trade, exemption applies with a valid VAT number and the tax is self-assessed. On imports from outside your customs union, expect import tax with no duty.

Shipping. $200 to $500 for a current-generation machine weighing 12 to 25 kg, depending on distance and urgency. Check whether transit insurance is included, because an ASIC damaged in transit without cover is a total loss.

Broker fees. $50 to $150 at DHL, FedEx, or UPS on a cross-border import. They are separate from duty and tax, and often appear after delivery.

The power cable. ASICs ship without a cord, with a bare C20 or C16 inlet. Budget $30 to $80 for a dedicated cable, or the price of a rack PDU if you install several machines.

Warranty and after-sales

Bitmain and MicroBT both warrant twelve months on function, excluding normal wear.

The real question to ask before ordering is who pays return shipping. A local reseller generally covers the round trip during the first year, which should be confirmed in writing in the terms of sale. Buying direct, the return to Hong Kong stays on you, $150 to $300, an amount that is often prohibitive for a single machine.

On a machine clearing $7 of margin a day, six weeks out of service represents about $290 of lost revenue, on top of return shipping.

Checks before paying

Authenticity. The serial number must appear on the machine and on the invoice, and the two must match. The Bitmain or MicroBT authenticity certificate is verifiable on the manufacturer site from that number. For a remote purchase, require photos from every angle, including a legible serial number.

Firmware. Check the installed version. Some third-party images such as Vnish, LuxOS, or Braiins are legitimate optimizations. Others, downloaded outside official channels, divert part of the hashrate to the publisher's pool, which only shows up when you compare local hashrate against what your pool counts. When in doubt, buy new or require a return to manufacturer firmware before payment.

Three common scams

The private seller with no invoice. An "unused" machine offered 30 % below market is most often end-of-life, faulty, or of doubtful origin. Always require the original purchase invoice and the serial number, and refuse cash payment.

Disguised cloud mining. The formula "buy an ASIC from us, we operate it and send you the BTC" is legitimate as long as you physically own the machine and can retrieve it on request: that is the principle behind our hosting offer. If the machine runs in a datacenter nobody can visit and you cannot take it back, you are not buying hardware but a contract, which is an entirely different risk.

The abnormally low price. An "Antminer S21 Pro" at $1,300 on a general marketplace is a fake, a rebadged previous generation, or nothing at all. The rule fits in one line: no new current-generation ASIC sits below $3,500 in 2026.

Payment and invoicing

Wire or ACH remains the standard, traceable and irrevocable. Credit cards are accepted at some resellers, with caps often below $5,000. Payment in BTC or stablecoin is offered by a few specialized resellers, with no buyer protection and no recourse after transfer.

The invoice conditions your accounting, your depreciation, and any B2B tax deduction. Check that it lists the seller's tax ID, a precise description including model and serial number, the tax breakout, and the warranty conditions.
